New ‘Star Trek’ movie in the works from ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley — the duo behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and the screenplay for Spider-Man: Homecoming — are officially enlisting in Starfleet. The pair has been hired to write, produce, and direct a brand-new Star Trek film aimed at jump-starting the franchise’s long-dormant big-screen future.

But Trekkies expecting a return to the J.J. Abrams–led reboot universe may want to divert power to disappointment. As Variety previously reported, the upcoming movie will not continue the Chris Pine timeline (even though Pine starred in Goldstein and Daley’s D&D film), nor will it tie into any existing or past Star Trek shows, films, or previously announced projects. Plot details are tightly sealed, so fans of Jean-Luc Picard and Kathryn Janeway may want to stand down from red alert.

The road back to theaters has been rockier than a Klingon’s forehead. Since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, Paramount has cycled through multiple would-be captains: Chris Hemsworth nearly returned as Kirk’s father; Quentin Tarantino flirted with a 1930s gangster-style Trek; and filmmakers Noah Hawley and Matt Shakman progressed far enough to start building sets before their projects fizzled. Both have since moved on — Hawley to FX’s Alien: Earth, and Shakman to Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

In 2024, two more Trek films were revealed to be in development: a “final chapter” screenplay from Steve Yockey featuring the Pine/Quinto/Saldaña cast, and a franchise origin story from Toby Haynes based on a script by Seth Grahame-Smith. Both now appear stranded in deep space with blinking life-support panels.

Reviving Star Trek has become a top priority for Paramount’s new leadership under David Ellison’s Skydance, which took control of the studio in August. Goldstein and Daley already have a strong rapport with the company after writing, directing, and producing the upcoming Skydance film Mayday, starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. The project, produced through their GoldDay banner, will debut on Apple TV+.

The duo previously directed New Line’s hit comedy Game Night, helmed the Vacation reboot, and contributed writing work to Horrible Bosses and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.
