Yankees predicted to land $260 million star in trade with Cardinals

The New York Yankees desperately need to add another infielder to their roster this offseason, and there are a few quality options on the market.

The Yankees could dive into free agency, but it might be difficult to find a quality option for the right price. With that in mind, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the Yankees swing a trade.

Patrick McAvoy of St. Louis Cardinals OnSi predicted the Yankees would swing a huge trade for Cardinals veteran Nolan Arenado this offseason.

“This one doesn’t seem exceptionally likely, but it would get the offseason moving. New York has had questions at the hot corner over the last couple of seasons,” McAvoy wrote. “Arenado now has two seasons left on his deal and St. Louis already has shown its willing to eat up cash to trade its veterans away. If the Yankees make a move — especially one involving a big-name talent like Arenado — that will get people talking.”

The Yankees have reportedly been a landing spot for Arenado for around a year, but no deal has come to fruition.

The Yankees still need to add a veteran to their infield, and Arenado could be the perfect platoon option at third base if the Cardinals are willing to eat his contract. After finding no suitors for the veteran for the last year, the Cardinals are much more likely to eat a chunk or all of Arenado’s deal to move him off the roster.

This would allow the Yankees to use Arenado as a defensive substitute and platoon option at third base. His days of being a lineup staple are over unless he can improve before next year, but it seems unlikely.
