Yankees 2-time All-Star predicted to see big pay raise in arbitration

The New York Yankees could have as many as 14 players going to arbitration this winter in search of a pay increase for next season.

For the Bronx Bombers, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Volpe highlight the list, but there’s another name who will see a big pay raise: two-time All-Star closer David Bednar.

The Yankees acquired Bednar at the trade deadline from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for multiple prospects. After being optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis early in the season, Bednar turned a corner and didn’t look back, especially once he got to the Bronx. Now, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic projects David Bednar to make $9 million in 2026.

If this estimate is correct, it would result in a 52.54% increase in pay for Bednar, as he would jump from the $5.9 million he made this year. The 31-year-old reliever combined for 27 saves between Pittsburgh and New York and is slated to be the Yankees’ closer moving forward, as Devin Williams is unlikely to return.

Despite his previous inconsistencies, paying $9 million for a closer in today’s game is great value for the Yankees. Bednar would be walking away with a sizable paycheck, but it would be a deal that wouldn’t break the bank for general manager Brian Cashman.

This is Bednar’s final season of arbitration before becoming a free agent after next season. If the Yankees want to keep him around beyond next year, they will do right in paying him what he is owed, as they hope he can lead their bullpen deeper into October.
