Wrestling Legend and Infamous Heel Passes Away at 60

The professional wrestling world is in mourning following reports that Terry Brunk, known globally to fans as the hardcore icon Sabu, has passed away at the age of 60. Sabu was a former ECW World Champion who was celebrated as one of the most innovative and fearless performers of his generation.

WWE issued a statement on his reported passing, acknowledging his significant contributions. “WWE is saddened to learn that Terry Brunk, known to wrestling fans as Sabu, has passed away,” the statement began.

“The nephew of WWE Hall of Famer, The Sheik, Sabu became a national star as part of ECW, where he pioneered hardcore wrestling,” WWE continued. His style was unforgettable: “…leaping from chairs and driving his opponents through tables and even barbed wire.”

WWE highlighted his legendary ECW rivalries. “Many of ECW’s greatest matches featured Sabu doing battle with the likes of WWE Hall of Famers Rob Van Dam and Mick Foley, as well as The Sandman and his greatest rival, Tazz.”

His subsequent tenure with WWE during its ECW revival was also noted. “In 2006, Sabu signed with WWE as part of WWE’s revival of the ECW brand. Finally unleashed on WWE, Sabu competed in marquee contests with Rey Mysterio for the World Heavyweight Championship and John Cena for the WWE Championship.”

The company recalled one of his significant WWE moments. “One of his greatest accomplishments came when he and fellow ECW Originals, The Sandman, Tommy Dreamer and Van Dam were victorious at WrestleMania 23 in Sabu’s native Detroit in front of over 80,000 fans.”

Regarding his post-WWE career, the statement added, “Sabu left WWE soon after in 2007 and continued to travel the world as sports-entertainment’s human highlight reel.” WWE concluded by offering its sympathies: “WWE extends its condolences to Sabu’s family, friends and fans.”

Trained by his legendary uncle, The Sheik (Ed Farhat), Sabu became a cornerstone of Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in the 1990s. His monikers, including the “Homicidal, Suicidal, Genocidal, Death-Defying Maniac,” aptly described his in-ring approach.

In ECW, he was a decorated champion, holding the ECW World Heavyweight Championship twice. He also captured the ECW World Television Championship once and was a three-time ECW World Tag Team Champion, once with Taz and twice with Rob Van Dam.

Sabu’s groundbreaking, high-risk, and often brutal hardcore style, which frequently incorporated tables, chairs, and barbed wire, made him a revered cult icon. His daredevil approach left an indelible mark and influenced a generation of wrestlers who followed.

Beyond his defining ECW run, Sabu’s career spanned the globe, including impactful stints in Japan with promotions like Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling (FMW) and New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). He also made appearances in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and TNA/Impact Wrestling.

Sabu wrestled his final match on April 18, 2025, during WrestleMania weekend in Las Vegas, where he faced Joey Janela. His last known public appearance was at the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance reunion show in Philadelphia during the weekend of May 3-4, 2025.
