Team Europe Roster Has ‘Miracle at Medinah’ Ryder Cup Vibes

All of the 2025 Ryder Cup competitors are finally set. On Monday morning, Team Europe captain Luke Donald announced his six captain’s picks, a few days after Keegan Bradley named the rest of Team USA.

Donald revealed that Ludvig Aberg, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka were joining the team.

For the first time in 13 years, the European side will look very familiar from one competition to the next. There is only one new member of Team Europe: Rasmus Hojgaard.

Hojgaard is the only Ryder Cup rookie on the squad, having earned his spot via automatic qualification (finishing top six in the Ryder Cup rankings). He is replacing his twin brother, Nicolai Hojgaard as the only change.

“Obviously a lot of continuity from Rome,” Donald said. “That’s unusual to have so many people coming back, but it just shows how good these players are.

“But even though we have a lot of continuity, this is a different animal to play away in America. We understand how difficult that is.”

Two years ago, the Europeans embarrassed Team USA in Rome. That alone does not bode well for the Americans. But the last time Team Europe only had one rookie on the team will summon even more painful memories.

The last time either side won the Ryder Cup on the road was in 2012. It was dubbed the “Miracle at Medinah” from the Medinah Country Club in Illinois.

The United States led 10-6 heading into Sunday singles. Yet, they were throttled heads up, as the Europeans garnered 8.5 of the 12 possible points for a 14.5-13.5 victory.

The Americans will instead look to instill the good memories from Whistling Straits in 2021. The 19-9 margin of victory over Team Europe is the largest in Ryder Cup history.

Seven members of this year’s squad were a part of that historic team.

Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay automatically qualified. Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Harris English were named captain’s picks.

Now, Scheffler has lapped the world in terms of recent accomplishments. He will undoubtedly be the measuring stick for Team USA if they want to bring the title back home.
