Ryder Cup Dreams Crushed for These Team Europe Roster Snubs

Days after Keegan Bradley finalized Team USA’s Ryder Cup roster, European captain Luke Donald announced his 12-man squad Monday.

While Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick, Sepp Straka and Ludvig Åberg were named as captain’s picks, several hopefuls on the bubble were left heartbroken.

Among them, Matt Wallace’s omission struck a particularly emotional chord. Wallace, who finished tied for second at the Omega European Masters on Sunday, had entered the week knowing a win could punch his ticket to Bethpage.

But after a final-round 67, he fell two strokes short of South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence, who claimed the title.

“I’ll never give up on the Ryder Cup, you know,” Wallace told reporters through tears in his post-round interview. “I just won’t, so that’s it.”

Here are five bubble players who missed out on their ticket to Bethpage Black.

5. Jordan Smith
Smith made the cut in both majors he played this season, the US Open and the Open Championship, finishing T61 and T45, respectively. On the DP World Tour, too, Smith posted two runner-up finishes, one at the BMW International Open and another at the Volvo China Open.

While those results show resilience under pressure, they didn’t elevate him into the top tier of European professionals. His scoring was steady but lacked the kind of top-20 breakthrough that often catches a captain’s eye.

4. Aaron Rai
Rai posted 10 top-25 finishes this season and won last year’s Wyndham Championship. The Englishman also built a solid resume, posting 10 top-25 finishes across the PGA and DP World Tours.

However, his lack of Ryder Cup experience made him lose the chance. Despite his steady rise, he’s never competed in the biennial event, and Donald appeared to favor players with proven team chemistry.

3. Marco Penge
A two-time winner on the DP World Tour this season, Marco Penge’s name surfaced frequently in Ryder Cup discussions. He claimed the Hainan Classic in April and the Danish Golf Championship in August, edging out home favorite Rasmus Højgaard.

The pro finished 14th in the European Ryder Cup standings, but was still left off Luke Donald’s final roster on Monday. The snub wasn’t about form but experience. Penge has never played in a major championship weekend, having missed the cut at The Open and not qualified for the others.

2. Thomas Detry
Ranked 13th in the standings, Detry won the WM Phoenix Open and posted five top-25 finishes on the PGA Tour. But the early-season success dipped post-June. Detry’s stats across the board were middling, and he’s yet to prove himself in team formats.

1. Matt Wallace
The emotional heartbeat of the snub list. Wallace’s passion, ranking and recent form made him a strong contender. But no wins and shaky driving stats sealed his fate. Wallace finished 12th in the European Ryder Cup standings, the highest-ranked player not selected.

That said, for those left behind, the pain is real, but so is the fire to return stronger in 2027.
