Red Sox Veteran Leader Listed Among ‘Best Fits’ for Unlikely Tigers Trade

The Boston Red Sox are in a weird spot this season. They have the roster to win games, but are missing a few key pieces to put them over the top. Pair this with some untimely injuries and the recent falling out with Rafael Devers, then it becomes clear to see the Red Sox are a bit dysfunctional.

This could cause them to trade away some of their better players as the front office looks to build a better tomorrow.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan recently pondered a blockbuster trade between the Red Sox and Detroit Tigers that would send Alex Bregman to the Tigers.

“Bregman has been an elite big league hitter since he entered the league in 2016 but has leaned more into power this year, with his highest isolated power since 2019,” they wrote. “Most of his underlying power indicators (barrel rate, maximum exit velo, average launch angle and hard hit rate) are at career highs. His $40 million salary — and the chance to opt into two more years at $40 million annually — significantly shortens the list of teams that would take on his deal.”

The Tigers were one of the teams linked to Bregman the closest during the free agency period. If he becomes available at the trade deadline, the Tigers will likely be one of the more aggressive teams to try to land him.

But it’s unlikely the Red Sox will trade their star third baseman. The team committed to him, and it cost them their relationship with Devers. Bregman is also in the midst of a great year when healthy.

Boston is closer to winning a World Series than it is to the bottom of the league. The team is only a few moves and some fortunate health away from contending for a World Series. Trading away the best player on the roster, who’s causing no issues, wouldn’t make sense.
