The No. 10 Miami Hurricanes defeated the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes 24-14 on Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff.

Miami opened the scoring midway through the first quarter and later added a pick-six off Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin to build a 14-0 lead. That score held into halftime after Buckeyes kicker Jayden Fielding missed a field goal in the final moments of the second quarter.

Ohio State struck first in the second half with a touchdown drive on its opening possession and even outscored Miami 14-10 after the break. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Hurricanes’ elite pass rush and dominant run game, which delivered when it mattered most.

Reacting to the victory on Thursday ahead of the other three CFP games, legendary college football coach Nick Saban had high praise for Miami.

“I think what impressed me the most is how relentless Miami competes in a game,” Saban said. “When Ohio State came out in the second half and answered the bell, Miami just kept playing. They rode through the smoke and made the plays they had to make when they needed to make them. These guys are the real deal, and they’re peaking at the right time.”

Miami has now pulled off wins as underdogs against Texas A&M and Ohio State to secure a spot in the CFP semifinals, where they will face the winner of Thursday night’s matchup between No. 6 Ole Miss and No. 3 Georgia.
