New American Airlines Boeing 777 Livery Mirrors Classic DC-3 Looks

Ahead of American Airlines celebrating its centennial, the U.S.-based airline unveiled a special livery that pays homage to one of its earliest planes, the DC-3. While it has a vintage-looking exterior, the interior of the plane is the beneficiary of the company’s new luxe interior design.
“American is focused on enhancing the travel experience with customers in mind and this Flagship livery is a continued testament to that endeavor. In taking inspiration from our Douglas DC-3 aircraft that revolutionized the aviation industry by starting to define what a premium travel experience is – and blending it with American’s recently debuted onboard products – we are paying homage to the rich history of our brand that our customers have come to love, while extending our commitment to continue elevating the travel experience to new heights,” Ron DeFeo, American’s chief communications officer, told Newsweek.
The livery will first be seen on a Boeing 777-300 starting in November. It features several layers of paint and graphics, starting with a Silver Eagle paint color, the same color that 1,600 American Airlines aircraft already wear across the company’s mainline and regional fleets.
American’s vintage orange lightning bolt motif is featured on both sides of the plane. It first appeared on the Douglas DC-3 90 years ago. That plane was the first time that American ventured into premium air travel territory.

Each DC-3 that American took delivery of was named for a city that the company served at the time. In keeping with that tradition, American has named the 777 “Flagship DFW,” paying homage to its largest hub and headquarters location.
Three-quarters of the way down the body of the plane, a roundel graphic is present and features a motif airline enthusiasts will immediately recognize: an eagle connecting the world.
Today, American flies to more than 350 global destinations.

Refreshed planes in its 787 fleet feature the latest configuration and amenities. Earlier this year, the company announced that it was bringing new suites, seats, technology and comfort to its Boeing 787 aircraft.
The new Flagship Suites are a true business class product with privacy doors, wireless charging pads and unique chaise lounge seating positions. Wireless charging has also been installed in Premium Economy seats, a first for U.S. travelers in that fare class. Main Cabin passengers have new 4K OLED screens to enjoy, another U.S. carrier first.

This commemoratively liveried 777 features seats and amenities akin to what the fresh 787s offer. Additional 777-300 airplanes will receive the configuration, which has 70 Flagship Suite spaces and 44 Premium Economy seats in the new configuration.
