Netflix Acquires Oscar Shortlisted Live Action Short Film ‘The Singers’ In Advance Of Nominations
[ad_1]

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has acquired and will globally release the Oscar shortlisted film, The Singers from director Sam Davis. One of 15 current semi-finalists for the Academy Award for Live Action Short Film out of 207 films that qualified this year, The Singers is an adaptation of a 19th century short story by Ivan Turgenev, in which a lowly pub full of downtrodden patrons connect unexpectedly through an impromptu sing-off.
The stars are all first-time actors who could deliver authenticity and imbue their own stories and experiences into the film. The cast is said to be entirely viral video singing talents and other one-of-a-kind personalities from the unlikeliest corners of the internet.
“The Singers is a love letter to underdogs and diamonds in the rough, so for audiences around the world to be able to see these unsung talents on Netflix is truly a dream come true for our whole team,” Davis, who was previously Oscar nominated as a producer of the docu short Nai Nai & Wai Po, tells Deadline. “On set there were jokes from our cast of first-time actors about newfound fame, always met with hearty laughter and teasing. But beneath the humor, there was an undeniable sense that we were onto something special.”
The cast and their original videos include:
- Mike Young (Instagram / Viral Singing Video) – soulful singer from New York City, semi-finalist on America’s Got Talent, rose to fame in 2016 when a viral video of him singing “Unchained Melody” captivated millions.
- Chris Smither (Instagram) – folks-blues legend known for his masterful fingerpicking and poetic songwriting.
- Will Harrington (Instagram / Singing Video) – pianist, street performer, and piano technician who started busking in Provincetown as a young teen.
- Judah Kelly (Instagram / The Voice Australia Video) – Australian singer-songwriter who won The Voice Australia in 2017.
- Matthew Corcoran (Instagram) – operatic tenor, voice teacher, and doctoral student at the University of Oklahoma; has performed with renowned opera ensembles across the U.S.
- Hutch (Instagram / “Soft White Underbelly” Video) – U.S. Army war veteran, storyteller, and survivor.
And Tio Rigo & Mr. George (known as Llanteros 503) (TikTok) – viral TikTok dance sensations that blend humor, rhythm, and Salvadorean pride. Originally tire specialists, their playful performances turned them into social media stars, earning hundreds of thousands of followers across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
With all the music recorded live on set and featuring such iconic songs as “The House Of The Rising Sun” and “Unchained Melody”, the film has won 35 Awards across 49 Film Festivals. It had its world premiere at SXSW and also played at Tribeca, among many other fests.
Producers are Jack Platt, David Breschel, Charlie Cohen, and Davis.
Nominations for the 98th Annual Academy Awards will be announced Thursday January 22, 2026 at 5:30AM PT.
