Michigan poaches top offensive, defensive coordinators from Big 12

Newly hired Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham revealed during Wednesday night’s Citrus Bowl broadcast that his inaugural coaching staff was 90% complete and he expected to finalize his hires quickly.
On Thursday morning, he started to make good on what he said.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Whittingham has made several high-profile hires including a top offensive and defensive coordinator from a couple Big 12 teams.

“Sources: Utah OC Jason Beck has informed Utah officials that he’s taking the offensive coordinator job at Michigan,” Thamel wrote on X.
Under Beck’s guidance, Utah ranked second in rushing offense (266 yards per game), fourth in total offense (482.9 yards per game), and fifth in scoring offense (41.3points per game).
Thamel also reported news of Michigan’s new defensive coordinator as well.

“Sources: BYU DC Jay Hill has officially agreed to become Michigan’s defensive coordinator,” Thamel said. He’d been Kyle Whittingham’s target since he took over at Michigan.”
Under Hill, BYU ranked 21st in scoring defense (19.1 points per game allowed), and 35th in total defense (332.4 yards per game).
CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz also reported Whittingham has hired a handful of other assistant coaches, many of which worked on his staff at Utah.
Michigan is bringing on former Utah offensive line coach/assistant head coach Jim Harding, who’s helped develop 12 All-Big 12 selections since 2015 (an NCAA high), tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham, who coached Buffalo Bills 2023 first-round pick Dalton Kincaid, wide receivers coach Micah Simon, and analyst/quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr.
