Mavericks’ Anthony Davis breaks silence on weight gain

Leading up to the start of the 2025-26 NBA season, fans alleged that Dallas Mavericks big man Anthony Davis appeared to be entering training camp looking heavier than in years past.

While fans joked about the irony of the Mavericks trading Luka Doncic for Davis, only for Doncic to commit to a dietary program, and Davis to gain weight, the ten-time All-Star isn’t too concerned.

While speaking to members of the press this week, including DLLS Mavs, Davis opened up on the situation, explaining that he usually enters training camp heavier than normal because he doesn’t want to be underweight by the time the season is in full swing.

“I feel good. I kind of almost go into every season, because I put on so much weight in the summer. Then by the time November comes, I’m usually like 255, 258. I never want to come in at my playing weight, because then I lose weight during the season and then I’m too small.

“I lose about 10 to 12 pounds very quickly during camp. I already lost five pounds, all the running and playing. So I’m never concerned about that. I feel great. I’m moving great. I feel good.”

After battling injuries throughout the 2024-25 season, Davis is eager to hit the ground running this season.

While the 2020 NBA champ is still dealing with redness in his right eye due to an offseason procedure to repair a detached retina, he’s made it clear that he isn’t on any sort of restriction heading into the season.

Instead, the Dallas forward will be wearing goggles to protect his eye, something he said was mandated by his doctor.

Despite Davis being healthy, the team will be heading into the 2025-26 season without Kyrie Irving, who is recovering from a torn ACL.

Dallas’ preseason will tip off with an Oct. 6 game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, with their regular season set to begin on Oct. 22 with a home game against the San Antonio Spurs.
