A seat downgrade is rarely celebrated, yet one passenger’s decision on a flight is being praised as a savvy move.
Reddit user xEbolavirus shared a photo showing his legs spread out in an empty row on a Delta flight traveling from Salt Lake City to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
The original poster (OP) said that prior to boarding the flight, he noticed that row 36 was completely “empty” on the seat map.
“I asked to be downgraded from a fully packed comfort+ seat,” the OP said.
“Gate agent was very surprised.”
A Calculated Switch
For many folks on the forum, the ability to lie down across a row outweighed the benefits of an upgraded seat.
“Smart move. Nothing beats having an entire row all to yourself for an entire flight,” a Reddit contributor admired.
Another person referenced Delta’s long-haul premium product, posting: “Nothing but Delta One beats a sky couch!”
For some, the comparison was even broader.
“A row of three empty seats beats a first class international seat every time,” a fellow pundit declared.
In a comment, the OP provided some further information saying, “I looked at the board before the flight to see how many standby passengers there were and how many already had seat assignments.
“The numbers works out to make it a safe bet and I just asked the gate agent to switch me seats right after she called zone one and before my zone two boarding.”
A Side Debate Over Etiquette
However, the OP’s photo showing his legs stretched across the row prompted at least one admonishment amid more than 100 remarks.
“For the love of God, take off your shoes, man!!! Great you got that spot, but not cool to leave your shoes on,” a critic wrote.
A fellow Redditor agreed, asking, “Could we normalize not putting shoes on the seat and arm rest? Nasty.”
Friction and Fascination
Air travel seating has long been a source of friction and fascination online.
Newsweek reported a Southwest Airlines passenger who was left stunned after another traveler insisted on sitting next to him—despite there being an empty row just across the aisle.
In a video shared to TikTok, the passenger filmed himself looking unimpressed before slowly panning around to show another passenger seated directly next to him in the middle seat, while the aisle seat and the opposite row remain empty.
“The row behind us was open too,” he added in the caption.
Newsweek also covered a viral Reddit post which showed a a passenger stretched out across a row of seats on a nearly empty trans-Atlantic flight.
The caption accompanying the post reads: “Everyone got three or four seats on my flight from Germany to California.”
Newsweek was unable to reach out to xEbolavirus for comment via Reddit. We could not verify the details of the case.
