Man found dead a day after reported missing on Lake Buchanan, officials say

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man was found dead a day after he was reported missing Saturday night on Lake Buchanan, according to the Chief Chad Mitchell with the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department.

Mitchell said the fire department was informed the man, whose identity had yet to be released Monday, was reported missing around 8 p.m. Four hours earlier, he left in a blue and white kayak without a life jacket and “was headed across the lake to fish at the dam,” according to the fire department.

Along with Buchanan VFD, the Cassie Volunteer Fire Department, East Lake Buchanan Volunteer Fire Department and the Tow Volunteer Fire Department all searched with boats along the area where the man was last seen. The search also included the southern and western shorelines of the lake, Mitchell said.

Additionally, Travis County Starflight and both Burnet and Llano county sheriff’s drone teams “performed aerial searches of the lake.” Officials suspended the operation by midnight, Mitchell said.

When Buchanan VFD resumed the search Sunday morning, Mitchell said the team concentrated on searching “along the western shoreline starting at Black Rock Park in Llano County.” Additionally, Buchanan VFD, Cassie VFD, Texas Parks and Wildlife game wardens and the Lower Colorado River Authority rangers “manned boats and walked the shoreline searching.”

Mitchell said a drone was deployed, and that is when the kayak was found “approximately 400 yards from the victim’s cabin.”

The man was found deceased near the kayak around 8 a.m. Sunday, Mitchell said. He said the man “would have survived if he had been wearing a life jacket.”

No other details were available Monday.
