An iPhone user who turned to the internet for help identifying a strange icon on their screen discovered an underutilized feature.
Posting on Reddit, user justvov shared a screenshot of their phone showing their battery percentage as well as a vertical rectangle with a person inside it.
“What does this symbol mean?” they asked, requesting support in a post that drew more than 950 upvotes.
The answer: Work Focus.

Commenters on the Reddit post offered the answer, as well as plenty of jokes.
“Your work focus is active,” one user noted, while another quipped, “Congratulations on having a job.”
“How people set up a Focus mode, see the icon and go ‘What is this icon on my screen?!’ is beyond me,” a third contributor remarked.
However, another replied, “When I updated iOS, the work focus was suddenly and magically enabled, despite having never set it up. I use my focus modes pretty carefully, so I’m pretty sure this is a glitch that could reasonably have happened to others.”
Focus Features
Apple offers several different types of “Focus” modes across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch to help users manage notifications and reduce distractions.
Do Not Disturb is the most basic Focus, which silences calls, alerts and notifications while the device is locked. Users can allow calls from specific people, enable repeated calls in case of emergencies, and schedule it for certain times, such as overnight.
Personal Focus is designed for downtime or personal activities. Users can customize which people and apps are allowed to send notifications. For example, you might allow messages from family while blocking work-related apps in the evening.
Sleep Focus works with the Health app and sleep schedule. It reduces distractions before bedtime, dims the lock screen and limits notifications to only essential contacts or apps.
Driving Focus activates automatically when driving is detected or when connected to a car’s Bluetooth. It silences notifications and can send automatic replies to selected contacts.
Fitness and Mindfulness Focus modes activate during workouts or meditation sessions, limiting interruptions while tracking activity.
Finally, Work Focus helps separate professional and personal life. You can allow notifications from work apps like email or Slack and specific colleagues, while silencing social media or entertainment apps.
Work Focus can also be scheduled to turn on automatically during work hours or when arriving at a specific location.
All Focus modes sync across Apple devices and can be customized with filters, lock screens and home screen pages.
