Indiana Fever GM breaks silence on big offseason plans

The Indiana Fever just wrapped up what was a disappointing and also magical 2025 WNBA season. Despite a ton of injury issues, including Caitlin Clark only playing in 13 games this year, the Fever made a run to the second round of the WNBA Playoffs and nearly defeated the Las Vegas Aces in a winner-take-all Game 5.

Unfortunately, they were unable to overcome the injuries when all was said and done.

Even though the Fever did not accomplish their ultimate goal of winning a championship, the future looks incredibly bright. If Clark was at full health, there is a good chance Indiana would have eliminated the Aces and moved on to the WNBA Finals.

Looking ahead to next season, Indiana has a good chance of competing for a championship. However, the front office will need to do a few things throughout the offseason in order to make that goal become a reality.

One of the main questions heading into the WNBA offseason has to do with the future of star guard Kelsey Mitchell. She is set to become a free agent this offseason. The Fever want to do everything possible to make sure she returns to Indiana.

In her end of season press conference, general manager Amber Cox made it clear that retaining Mitchell will be the team’s No. 1 priority this offseason.

“I’m going to sound like a broken record: The No. 1 priority will be Kelsey Mitchell and making sure she remains in a Fever uniform,” Cox said.

Mitchell became the team leader for the Fever this season with Clark out due to injury. Night after night, she scored the ball at a high level and took over the leadership role on the court.

When all was said and done this year, Mitchell played in 44 regular season games, averaging 20.2 points per game to go along with 3.4 assists, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.9 steals. In the playoffs, she averaged 22.3 points, three assists, 1.5 rebounds, and a steal.

Indiana will need to retain Mitchell if it wants any chance of winning a championship next season. Her fit alongside of Clark takes a lot of pressure off of the generational superstar. The Fever simply can’t afford to lose that or her scoring and shooting ability.

Hopefully, they’re able to get a deal done with Mitchell quickly. After that gets done, Indiana will need to make decisions on other players like Sophie Cunningham. It will be interesting to see what ends up happening with the Fever this offseason as they look to keep their core intact.
