The de facto national champion of HBCU football will be crowned on Saturday when the South Carolina State Bulldogs (9-3) take on the Prairie View A&M Panthers (10-3) in the annual Celebration Bowl between the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Southwestern Athletic Conference at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Prairie View A&M claimed its first SWAC title since 2009, running out the clock on No. 12 Jackson State for a 23-21 road victory in the conference championship game on Dec. 6. The Panthers never trailed, with Cameron Peters putting on a show with 294 yards and a touchdown through the air to go with 100 yards and a score on the ground. Cameron Bonner hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to put Prairie View A&M up 23-14, and Darrell Starling had an interception in the win.

South Carolina State booked its ticket to Atlanta with a 28-17 win at Delaware State on Nov. 22 that clinched the MEAC title. Jalen Levine opened the scoring with a 33-yard pick-six in the first quarter, while William Atkins IV threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Shaw picked up 99 yards on 16 carries, Ryan Stubblefield had a scoring run, and Jordan Smith and Johnny Jones caught TD passes. Josh Barker had a pair of sacks, and Jabin Ford, Tyler Jones, and Jaiden Kimble notched interceptions.

The Bulldogs last claimed the HBCU national championship in 2021 with a Celebration Bowl over Jackson State and lost to the Tigers in last year’s game. Prairie View A&M is playing in the Celebration Bowl for the first time and claimed the last of its five Black College national titles in 1964.
