France has already sewn up its spot at the 2026 World Cup and is no danger of being budged from top spot in UEFA qualifying Group D when it takes on Azerbaijan this Sunday. Les Bleus have gone undefeated through the pool stage and dropped just two points to secure the only automatic qualifying berth, while Azerbaijan has managed to seal just one point from a possible 15 and has long since been eliminated.
Didier Deschamps’ men battered Ukraine 4-0 on Thursday to put their World Cup fate beyond any remaining doubt, establishing an unassailable six-point lead at the top of the group. And that gives the coach licence to rotate in some of his lesser-used stars for the trip to Baku.
This will be just the fourth time France and Azerbaijan have met, with Les Bleus boasting victory in each of their three encounters to date by a 15-0 aggregate scoreline. Having whimpered out of World Cup contention, a maiden goal against the two-time world champions may be sufficient consolation for an Azerbaijan side low on morale.
