Elgin PD investigating after body recovered from pond

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Elgin Police Department said it is investigating a death after a man was recovered from a pond Wednesday afternoon, according to a press release from the department.

Around 10:14 a.m., an Elgin police officer was told that a vehicle had driven through the parking lot of the Bastrop County Tax Office, located at 1125 Dildy Drive, and crashed into a dumpster enclosure behind the property.

Police said witnesses reported that the vehicle continued across the tax office lot and onto an adjacent private lot, eventually crashing into a pond on the property.

The officer responded to the scene and confirmed the vehicle was in the water. According to Elgin PD, the officer went in the water to attempt to rescue any occupants inside of the vehicle, but no one was found. The department then reached out to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team for help.

Due to the time elapsed since the submerge, officials shifted the operation from a rescue mission to a recovery mission.

At 1 p.m., authorities recovered a black car with the driver inside. Police identified him as Andrew Campbell, 77, of Elgin. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Elgin Police said the cause of the crash is currently unknown.

This incident is being investigated by the EPD Criminal Investigations Division and Crash Reconstruction Team.
