In 2019 then-James Madison head coach Curt Cignetti was asked a simple question after his team defeated Monmouth 66-21 in its FCS playoff opener: was he happy?
The quotable coach characteristically replied, “No.” Fast forward six years, Cignetti didn’t just win one playoff game at the FCS level, but three playoff games and a national title at a basketball school which had one of the losingest football programs in collegiate history.
Following Indiana‘s national title win, Natalie Cignetti’s tweet about the encounter started going viral once again, prompting her followup.

“This tweet of mine from 2019 resurfaced randomly. Everyone is wondering if you are happy now lol. So…are you happy??” she asked her father after Indiana defeated Miami 27-21 in the national title on Monday night.
“Yes,” he said with seven double-exclamation points to emphasize his true feelings following the win.
Ahead of the Hoosiers win over Oregon this playoff season Cignetti admitted there were other times he’s been happy as well – it just never looks like he’s actually happy.
“There are a lot of times I’m happy, I just don’t show that I’m happy,” Cignetti said in the national media press conference before the semifinal on Thursday. “And if I’m going to ask my players to play the same regardless of the competitive circumstances, then I can’t be seen on the sideline high-fiving people or celebrating.”
