Chiefs Linked to 5-Time Pro Bowl RB in Possible NFL Trade

The Kansas City Chiefs are 1-2 to start the season, suffering back-to-back losses to the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles to open up the year.

The reigning AFC champions bounced back in Week 3, but the offense still wasn’t firing on all cylinders in their 22-9 win over the New York Giants.

The Chiefs are averaging 108 rushing yards per game, ranking them 17th in the league, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the team’s leading rusher heading into Week 4. Kansas City is lacking a clear RB1 as Isiah Pacheco, Kareem Hunt and rookie Brashard Smith have each failed to assert their dominance through the first three games of the year.

If the Chiefs want to add a clear lead rusher in the backfield, they may need to make an aggressive push before this year’s trade deadline on Nov. 4.

On Wednesday, NFL.com analyst/former NFL running back Maurice Jones-Drew listed five RBs that teams should pursue before the 2025 deadline. The No. 2 player on the list is New Orleans Saints veteran running back Alvin Kamara, who Jones-Drew believes would be an excellent fit for the Chiefs.

Jones-Drew cited the 0-3 Saints’ impending rebuild and the Chiefs’ need for an experienced playmaker in the backfield as reasons why this trade could benefit both sides.

“Kamara’s trade value might not be nearly as high as it once was, but by moving the experienced playmaker, New Orleans would pick up draft capital and free up some cap space. The team that should seriously consider calling GM Mickey Loomis? Kansas City. Kamara could be the answer to many of the Chiefs’ offensive problems,” Jones-Drew wrote.

Kamara, the 2017 Offensive Rookie of the Year, is playing in his ninth season with the Saints. As one of the most prolific pass-catching RBs in the league, the five-time Pro Bowler would give Mahomes an excellent weapon out of the backfield. Kamara leads the league in receptions (582) and receiving yards (4,809) by a RB since 2017, and he has the third-most touchdown catches among RBs (25) over that same span.

Through the first three games of his ninth NFL season, Kamara has rushed for 186 yards and one touchdown. The 30-year-old veteran also has nine catches for 47 yards.

The Saints will look to notch their first win of the season in a tough Week 4 matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday while the Chiefs will face off against the Baltimore Ravens.

If New Orleans falls to 0-4, a fire sale could start happening sooner rather than later.
