Blue Jays remove injured Anthony Santander from ALCS roster in huge loss

The Blue Jays will be without their $92 million slugger for the rest of the postseason.

Anthony Santander has been removed from the ALCS roster and replaced by Joey Loperfido. If Toronto makes the World Series, Santander would be ineligible to rejoin the team.

Santander has dealt with back issues in the playoffs and was removed in the bottom of the fifth in Wednesday night’s American League Championship Series Game 3 win over the Mariners for Myles Straw.

“Checked in with him this morning and he still felt it,” manager John Schneider told reporters Thursday of Santander’s back, according to Sportsnet. Talking to him and after getting some treatment, didn’t feel like the right thing to do to put him out there.”

Santander, after a career-high 44 home runs with the Orioles last year, was expected to be a key piece in the Blue Jays’ lineup.

That was not the case, though, as he dealt with a left shoulder issue that limited him to just 54 regular season games.

When he did play, the switch-hitting Santander was mostly a non-factor with six long balls and a .171/.271/.294 slash line. He is 3-for-15 with two RBIs in the playoffs.

Despite a lack of production from Santander, the Blue Jays are back in the ALCS for the first time since 2016.

They fell into a 2-0 hole before breaking out in a 13-4 rout over Seattle on Wednesday.

All eyes are now on 41-year-old Max Scherzer, who is getting the Game 4 start against the Mariners’ Luis Castillo.
