Blue Jays get major Bo Bichette injury news as World Series nears

The Toronto Blue Jays are hoping to get All-Star infielder Bo Bichette back for the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bichette hasn’t played this postseason, and has been out since early September due to a PCL sprain.

Bichette stated right after Game 7 of the American League Championship Series that he’d be ready for the World Series. On Thursday, manager John Schneider provided a more substantial injury update on the infielder, who has also been working out at a new position.

“Continuing to make progress,” Schneider said of Bichette on Thursday. “He’s going to do that again today, hit live. He’s taking ground balls, running. He’s going to do more of the same today. So you guys will see him out there. He’s feeling good, which is nice. Still a few more boxes to check.”

Bichette, who’s only played shortstop or designated hitter in his MLB career, has been taking ground balls at second base ahead of the World Series. Schneider was asked where the All-Star shortstop would most likely play between the three positions — shortstop, second base or DH — assuming he’s on the roster.

“We’ll see,” Schneider said. “We’re kind of coming right down to the wire with it. I could see all three of those things happening, to be honest with you. Just kind of have to talk to him after the workout today, see how comfortable he felt doing everything and make the best decision.”

Bichette is coming off a strong regular season, slashing .311/.357/.483 across 139 games with 18 home runs, 94 RBIs and an OPS of .840. It appears he’s trending toward being on the roster, but the Blue Jays don’t have to announce a final decision before Friday.

As for the position, Schneider admitted that it’s a bit of a “leap” to potentially have him play second base, but one they would be confident in.

“It’s a little bit of a leap, year, for sure,” Schneider said. ” Again, I think just in conversations with Bo, he’s pretty realistic about how he feels and how he will feel if he’s out there. So it’s something we got to continue to work through, really. I think that if he feels comfortable doing it, I’m going to listen to players and trust them. I’ve known Bo for a long. So we’ll see how today goes.”

He added: “I’ve always said, if you can play shortstop, you can kind of play anywhere.”
