Baby starts crying, mom in disbelief at what toddler does next

A mom of two young kids was left stunned at what her toddler daughter did when her baby sister started crying.

Kiera Crawford, from Scotland, was relaxing at home with her 19-month-old daughter Cadie when her 9-week-old sister, Hallie, became upset.

“Cadie had just got up from her nap and was playing with her toys and my newborn started fussing for her dummy,” Crawford told Newsweek.

Up until that point, Cadie had been largely oblivious to Hallie’s existence.

“Cadie never interacted with her sister. I think with them being so close in age she’s still a baby herself,” Crawford said. 

“But I noticed she turned round and immediately started heading towards Hallie so I decided to sit back and let her go over to see what she would do and film it to show her dad.”

Having a second child undoubtedly adds to the stress of home life.

A 2018 study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family found that the addition of a second child increases time pressure for parents and has a debilitating impact on their mental health.

Crawford was apprehensive about becoming a mom of two kids under 2.

“When I was pregnant with Hallie I was so nervous about having two under 2 and was constantly looking on TikTok for reassurance and to see what it would look like,” she said.

Picking up her phone to record Cadie interacting with Hallie in that moment, Crawford had no idea whether she would end up with an adorable moment or the first of many fights to come. Thankfully, it proved to be the former rather than the latter.

“I’m so glad I did it because it was sweeter than I could’ve imagined,” she said.

The resulting footage, which Crawford later posted to TikTok under the handle @kieracrawfordx, captured something wonderful: Cadie picking up Hallie’s dummy and handing it back to her.

Watching what she hopes will be the first of many sweet big sister moments to come, Crawford felt “so emotional.”

“I felt so proud of her and myself for raising her so gentle and loving,” Crawford said. “She’s been amazing. She normally completely ignores her but recently has been a lot more affectionate and interested.”

The clip went viral, amassing over 130,000 views on TikTok. Crawford hopes it gives encouragement to other moms like her out there and shows that, amid all the chaos, there are moments of magic.

“I wanted to post it so any other moms that might be nervous and in the position I was in can see it and take some reassurance and positivity away from it,” she said.
