AUSTIN (KXAN) — Missy Elliott, watch out, because here comes Mama Duke!

That’s what Mel B said moments before she slammed the Golden Buzzer during America’s Got Talent’s live Quarterfinals episode Tuesday night.

That buzzer secured a spot in the show’s Season 20 finale for Mama Duke, an Austin-based singer and rapper whose popularity took off after she performed her original song ‘Feels So Good To Be You’ in the audition portion of the competition.

Mama Duke performed a new original song, “The Mama Duke Show,” on Tuesday night, earning her Mel B’s only Quarterfinal Golden Buzzer, allowing her to skip the voting process and Semifinals rounds.

Judges Mel B.Sofía VergaraSimon Cowell and Howie Mandel loved her performance Tuesday night, as did the audience, who barely quieted enough for the judges to give their assessments.

Cowell told Mama Duke she had, “what I call IT,” and Vergara said she didn’t think anyone like Mama Duke had ever been on the AGT stage before. Mandel could barely speak over the audience, but when he did he gave her praise, saying she was authentic, “so real, so pure,” and a star.

When it came time for Mel B. to share her feedback, she didn’t have a lot to say, but she did something that spoke louder than words.

“What can I say? I loved you the first time, and I love you even more right now,” Mel B. said. “You know what? Missy Elliott better be watching out for you because you’re coming right now!”

Mel B. slammed the Golden Buzzer as she said “right now,” blasting golden confetti everywhere, then she took to the stage to hug Mama Duke and speak with her up close.

The former Spice Girl has been a Mama Duke fan from the start. During Mama Duke’s audition, Mel B. told her that her original song was “already a hit.” And that it became — “Feels So Good To Be You” reached No. 4 on the iTunes pop charts and No. 13 on the all-genre charts in July.

Viewer votes will determine which of Tuesday’s other acts will move on to the semifinals along with Mama Duke. Those results will be revealed Wednesday night.

During the finale performances on Sept. 23, Mama Duke will compete against 10 other finalists for the Season 20 title, which will be chosen by a viewer voting system. Results will be revealed the following night.

How America’s Got Talent works

There were nine audition episodes in Season 20 of America’s Got Talent. The Top 44 were chosen from those nine episodes by viewers and judges to move onto the quarterfinals.

The 44 were split into four groups of 11 to perform during live broadcasts of the quarterfinal episodes for four consecutive Tuesdays. During and after those episodes, viewers vote for their favorite acts to move on, and the results of the voting are revealed the next night each week, according to NBC. The top three vote-getters move on to the quarterfinals.

During the quarterfinals, each judge gets to award one Golden Buzzer that sends an act straight to the finals. Each week gives each judge their own turn with the buzzer.

The top three most popular acts from each week of quarterfinals will compete as the 12 Semifinalists for one night of competition on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The Golden Buzzer will reappear that episode, where judges have one opportunity to send one act from the semifinals through to the finals, per NBC.

The rest of the acts will be subject to voting, and on Sept. 17, five acts will go home, and the top six will move on to finals.

The top six vote earners, plus the Semifinal Golden Buzzer winner and the four Quarterfinalist Golden Buzzer winners will then compete in the finals.

The AGT final live performance episode will be broadcast on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and the finale will be broadcast Sept. 24, where viewers and competitors find out who wins this season.
