A new report has bad news for the Yankees concerning a possible trade target

Ketel Marte’s contract has been the subject of a lot of attention this offseason. The Arizona Diamondbacks‘ second baseman is owed $102.5 million over the next six years, and even a $17 million average annual value undersells how inexpensive Marte is — relative to other three-time All-Stars, at least.

Of the salary left on the contract extension Marte signed in April, $41 million is deferred and paid out 10 years after it’s earned. Inflation will continue to drive down the present-day value of Marte’s contract, making it even more affordable for the Diamondbacks.

Marte, however, isn’t expected to remain a Diamondback for long. He’s been rumored as the subject of trade discussions this offseason as the Dbacks consider using him to acquire pitching help.

That’s somewhat easier said than done.

By the 10th day of the 2026 regular season, Marte will have the right to block a trade to all 29 teams, under the terms of his 10-and-5 rights (10 years of service time in MLB, five with his current team). Marte already has five teams on his no-trade list. Monday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that those teams are the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees and Athletics.

Among those teams, only the Yankees, Giants and Pirates have been linked to All-Star-caliber players via trades or free agency. The Giants, however, reside in the National League West, and Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen virtually never trades within his own division.

The Yankees and Pirates, then, are at a disadvantage compared to every other team that might be interested in acquiring Marte. Because Marte’s 10-and-5 rights kick in next April, it’s likely the Dbacks might view this offseason as a deadline of sorts to trading him — if they trade him at all.

According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Dbacks discussed Ryan Pepiot and Shane Baz in talks with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees and Pirates might have the pitching depth to put together a similar package for Marte, but the Diamondbacks would only be able to consummate a trade with either team after receiving permission from Marte.

Marte, 32, made the NL All-Star team for the second consecutive year in 2025, when he slashed .283/.376/.517 with 28 home runs.
