According to a criminal affidavit reviewed by NBC News, Vance Boelter sent a group text to his wife and other family members after allegedly fatally shooting Minnesota state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman.
He is also accused of injuring state Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman.
The group text sent by Boelter, 57, reportedly said, “Dad went to war last night…. I don’t wanna implicate anybody.”
According to NBC News, he also texted his wife separately, saying, “Words are not gonna explain how sorry I am for the situation… there’s gonna be some people coming to the house armed and trigger-happy and I don’t want you guys around.”
A subsequent search of his wife’s car uncovered two handguns, passports for her and the children, and $10,000 in cash, NBC News reported via the affidavit.
Boelter surrendered to police Sunday night after authorities discovered him in the woods near his home, ending a massive two-day manhunt. Federal prosecutors have charged Boelter with murder and stalking, offenses that could carry the death penalty if he is convicted. He also faces state charges of murder and attempted murder.
At a federal court hearing Monday in St. Paul, Boelter told the judge he could not afford legal representation. A federal public defender was appointed, and he is being held without bail, pending another court appearance next week.
