Texas offense sputters to 14-3 halftime lead over UTEP

AUSTIN (KXAN) — So far, it hasn’t been the kind of day the Texas Longhorns were hoping for.

With three of their first four drives ending on downs, and a red zone possession ending in an interception, the Longhorns lead UTEP 14-3 at halftime.

Texas running back CJ Baxter limped off the field after a 6-yard gain on the first play of the game and didn’t return. Arch Manning hasn’t been good, completing 5 of 16 passes for 69 yards, with his interception coming early in the second quarter on the UTEP 10-yard line.

Running back Jerrick Gibson has 59 rushing yards on 16 carries, and Manning scored both of the Longhorns’ touchdowns on a 2-yard bootleg and a 5-yard scramble. Through two-and-a-half games, Texas doesn’t have a rushing touchdown by a running back.

The Longhorns are 1-for-9 on third down and averaging 4.1 yards per play.

Texas outgained the Miners 187-123 in the first half. Carlos Arreola kicked a 39-yard field goal for the Miners’ only points. Quarterback Malachi Nelson is 12 for 16 passing with 99 yards and an interception. Jelani McDonald picked him off in the second quarter.
