Keeping area waterways, surrounding areas clean
AUSTIN (KXAN) — August is National Water Quality Month. It’s a time to raise awareness about the importance of clean and safe water. Citizens and their communities are asked to take action to protect valuable resources. Just as important is the need to ensure that we all have access to clean drinking water.
Locally, Central Texans are asked to do their part by volunteering their time, even doing something as simple as picking up their dog’s poop. Austin is home to more than 250,000 dogs that generate around 150,000 pounds of waste per day.
That pet waste can wash into the creeks and streams that cause algae overgrowth, harm wildlife, and make water unsafe for recreation.
Volunteer activities are numerous if locals want to be involved in this effort, one that should go on not just in August, but year-round. Those volunteer efforts can also involve children. Getting young adults involved allows them to have a sense of accomplishment when they have completed a project that helps those activities both in and out of the water.
