Carol Altieri Dies; Longtime CBS Executive In Program Practices Was 76
Carol Altieri, a longtime employee of CBS who worked in program practices, died Aug. 9 in her Palm Desert, Calif. home after a long illness. She was 76.
Born in Queens and raised on Long Island, Altieri attended Ithaca College and enrolled in secretarial school before joining CBS at age 20 to work as an executive assistant in the network’s NYC corporate offices. She joined the program practices department in 1974, holding the titles of editor and senior editor.
After moving to Los Angeles in 1984 as a director, Altieri was eventually promoted to vice president of program practices in 1984, and to senior VP in 2003. She retired in 2005.
Altieri was known for protecting creative rights while upholding broadcast standards. She authored the CBS Program Standards manual, a seminal document still guiding content evaluation today. She also participated in congressional hearings, special interest group discussions, and industry task forces, and helped to safeguard free speech in television against congressional overreach through her policies.
She wrote for UCLA’s Anderson School of Business and lectured graduate students on real-world business practices, leaving a legacy in policy through articles, speeches, and congressional testimony.
Contributions in her honor can be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Wounded Warriors Project.
