Austin ISD teacher detained by ICE, letter says

AUSTIN (KXAN) — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained an Austin Independent School District elementary school teacher, according to a letter from the district sent to families in September.

Austin ISD identified the teacher as Roberto López Falcón. López Falcón worked at Hart Elementary School, which is in north Austin between Cameron Road and Interstate 35.

The letter doesn’t state why the teacher was detained. KXAN has reached out to ICE for additional information. This story will be updated when we receive a response.

The district said the incident didn’t happen “at or near the school,” the letter says.

“Mr. Lopez Falcon is a valued member of our school, and their well-being is deeply important to us,” the letter reads.

Austin ISD said it’s placed a long-term substitute teacher in the class along with a fifth-grade “core content interventionist to ensure a smooth and consistent learning environment,” the letter reads.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
