Adam Sandler gives update on ‘Grown Ups 3’: “We don’t know what the hell is happening”
Adam Sandler’s not saying no to another round of summer hijinks. The actor and comedian gave a candid update about the long-rumored Grown Ups 3 while walking the red carpet at AFI Fest in Los Angeles this week.
Sandler, 59, starred alongside Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider in 2010’s Grown Ups, a comedy about five childhood friends who reunite for a Fourth of July weekend. The star-studded flick — which also featured Salma Hayek and Maya Rudolph — grossed over $270 million worldwide and spawned Grown Ups 2 in 2013, which raked in another $200 million.
Now, more than a decade later, fans are wondering if the gang could get back together for a third time. MovieWeb recently reported that a production listing suggests filming could begin in Vancouver next February — but according to Sandler, nothing’s official just yet.
“You know what? I don’t know what’s going to happen … if we’re just trying to do a lot of stuff,” Sandler told Us Weekly at the AFI Fest premiere of his latest movie, Jay Kelly. “I would love it. We’d love it. Everybody’s working on stuff. To be with those guys would be incredible. I had the best time making both those movies, but we don’t know what the hell is happening quite yet.”
He’s not the only one teasing fans. In a July interview with The Direct, James, 60, also hinted that something may be brewing. “I think there have been [conversations]. And I think, yeah, I think you can keep hope alive,” he said. “I would keep a lot of hope alive. And I think it’s happening — something’s happening. I can say that.”
While Grown Ups 3 remains up in the air, Sandler’s got plenty on his plate. The comedian hit the AFI Fest red carpet alongside his wife Jackie Sandler and Jay Kelly costar George Clooney. Directed by Noah Baumbach, the film follows a famous actor (Clooney) and his longtime manager (Sandler) as they reflect on fame, friendship, and legacy.
“I lucked into this,” Sandler told Us. “Noah called me a year before I got the script. He said he’s had an idea, and he’s going to write it, and I’m in it. And then I got to read the script, get affected by it emotionally and say, thanks for doing all the work, and now I got to make sure I don’t let you down.”
Sandler added that playing a talent manager gave him a deeper appreciation for the team that’s supported him over the years. “Well, the most important line, to me, in the movie, I say to George’s character, ‘Jay, you’re Jay Kelly, but I’m Jay Kelly, too,’” he explained. “It’s like, what I’m going after, they’re helping me go after… and give ideas to help me do the best I can do.”
And if that weren’t enough, Sandler’s Happy Gilmore 2 hit Netflix in July — nearly 30 years after the original. “When I walk down the street a lotta times people will say, ‘You ever gonna do Happy Gilmore 2?’” he said on Good Morning America. “And for 28 years, I was like, ‘What are you talking about? No.’ And then all of a sudden, I was like, ‘Maybe.’”
The comedy sequel features surprise appearances from Eminem, Bad Bunny, and Travis Kelce. “We wrote ’em stuff, everybody was kind enough to come,” Sandler said. “And everybody in it did a great job. Every day, someone cool would show up and we’d hang out.”
Jay Kelly opens in select theaters on November 14 before streaming globally on Netflix December 5.
