Full list of Rite Aid stores closing in June

Pharmacy chain Rite Aid is planning on shuttering dozens of stores this month, as the company scales back its nationwide footprint amid its second bankruptcy in as many years.

Why Is Rite Aid Closing Stores?

In early May, Rite Aid, which currently operates over 1,200 stores across the U.S., announced that it had filed for bankruptcy for the second time since October 2023. CEO Matt Schroeder cited long-term financial challenges, as well as “rapidly evolving retail and healthcare landscapes,” in the announcement.

In addition to securing $1.94 billion in new financing, the company said it was “pursuing a strategic and value-maximizing sale process for substantially all of its assets,” which it said will help it emerge from the bankruptcy process.

On May 15, Rite Aid said it had successfully entered into sale agreements and “pharmacy service transition agreements,” allowing for the transition of services from “more than 1,000 stores” to alternative operators including CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens and Albertsons.

Which Locations Will Close in June?

According to a May 6 filing, the pharmacy chain plans on shuttering 47 locations this month as part of the bankruptcy process:

Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, previously told Newsweek: “For some major retailers, 2025 is becoming a year of consolidation. Retail locations that have struggled in recent years to remain profitable due to rising costs and less demand are being shuttered, as companies focus their efforts on more successful stores. The hope is these closures will ultimately produce more fiscal and operational efficiency, but it will come at the cost of customers who favored these locations having fewer options.”

What Happens Next?

Rite Aid has filed several more notices of closing locations, with hundreds scheduled to shut over the next few months. Most will eventually be sold off—based on the company’s expressed intention to divest “substantially all of its assets”—but Rite Aid has said customers will be able use gift cards or rewards until June 6.
