Power generators come in handy especially during storm seasons

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas is no stranger to severe storms. Tornadoes can knock out power for days during our storm season. Hurricanes can do the same when they strike. Having a portable power generator can be life-saving when these tragic events occur.
However, the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) wants everyone who owns or will own one to make sure they know the rules when it comes to using them.
OPEI CEO Kris Kiser said there are several important factors to ensure back-up power when storms cause the lights to go out. This isn’t just for homeowners, but for businesses as well. Remote job sites are just as affected by these power outages as are homes.
Kiser said that generator owners should first review a generator’s instructions and inspect that the machine is in working order.
Using the correct fuel is essential to keep generators operating at peak efficiency. Kiser also said that its important to only pump fuel into a cool generator.
In addition to using the proper fuel, having proper ventilation is crucial — these generators are not designed for safe operation indoors.
