Confirmed mountain lion sighting in San Marcos

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The City of San Marcos issued a safety reminder to residents and trail visitors Friday after a mountain lion was spotted in the Purgatory Creek Natural Area near Dante Trail on Thursday. The area is also known as “Middle Purgatory.”

According to the city, the mountain lion was seen by a member of the city trail crew, and Texas Parks and Wildlife was notified.

The city said the mountain lion climbed out of a tree before running away.

“Neighbors in the Willow Creek area have also reported finding deceased deer in recent weeks, which may be related,” the city said.

According to the city, residents and visitors were urged to use caution when exploring the city’s natural areas.

The city advised hiking with a buddy, keeping children close and pets on a leash. The city also recommended visitors to stay on marked trails and leave parks before sunset, which is when wildlife is most active.

“If you encounter a mountain lion: do not approach it. Give it space and a way to escape — most will avoid confrontation,” the city said.
