US: Wall Street slips at open after strong run, weak housing starts data


Wall Street’s main indexes opened lower on Friday (Aug 16) after a weak housing starts report dampened sentiment after the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq’s six-straight sessions of gains on signs of US economic health.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 34.2 points, or 0.08 per cent, at the open to 40,528.86.

The S&P 500 fell 12.7 points, or 0.23 per cent, at the open to 5,530.5​, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 78.1 points, or 0.44 per cent, to 17,516.404 at the opening bell. REUTERS
