EXCLUSIVE: Hulu is developing The Witches Of Cambridge, a drama series based on the upcoming novel by Practical Magic author Alice Hoffman. The adaptation will be produced by Noah Hawley’s 26 Keys.
The series will follow two brilliant young women in 1950s Cambridge, Massachusetts, as they become immersed in a mysterious secret group of witches at Radcliffe known as the Lilith Society.
The premise draws parallels to Hoffman’s 1995 novel Practical Magic, which also centers on two witches, played in the movie adaptation by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
The Witches of Cambridge is the first book of a planned book series. It will be published by Scribner on August 11, 2026, ahead of the Sept. 11 release of movie sequel Practical Magic 2, based on Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic, which has Bullock and Kidman reprising their roles. There is also a staged musical production of Practical Magic in the works.
Hawley, who has an overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television, is the creator, writer and showrunner of FX’s Alien: Earth, based on the film franchise, which has been renewed for a second season, slated to begin production in 2026. He also continues as executive producer, writer, showrunner, and director of FX’s anthology series Fargo, whose five seasons to date have earned 70 Primetime Emmy nominations and seven wins.
Additionally, FX in November gave a series order to Hawley and Rob Mac’s adaptation of Ubisoft’s video game franchise Far Cry, with Mac set to star. Alien: Earth and Fargo are produced under Hawley’s Austin-based 26 Keys Productions banner, which also produced Hawley’s FX series Legion.
Hawley is repped by WME; Untitled Entertainment; and McKuin Frankel Whitehead. Hoffman is repped by CAA.
