European Film Bodies Issue Statement In Solidarity With Beleaguered Berlinale Director Tricia Tuttle

A trio of key European film bodies have come out in support of Berlinale Director Tricia Tuttle amid rumours on Wednesday that the German government is on the cusp of firing the respected festival exec from her role following a political backlash over pro-Palestinian speeches at the closing ceremony.

“Under Tricia Tuttle’s leadership, the Berlinale has reinforced its role as a key international festival and marketplace for European film,” European Film Promotion (EFP), the European Film Academy and distributor body Europa International said in a joint statement.

“We value the artistic vision and commitment she has brought to the festival. We believe her leadership provides a strong foundation for the Berlinale and for European cinema to move forward with confidence into the future,” it added.

Deadline was sent the statement just hours after news broke that Germany’s Ministry of Culture had called an extraordinary meeting for Thursday morning at which the leadership of the Berlinale would be on the agenda.

Local tabloid Bild reported that according to its sources, there was a move afoot to fire Tuttle following outrage from conservative politicians over a number of pro-Palestinian speeches during the closing ceremony, some of which attacked the German government and Israel.

Ironically, the fresh controversy follows a tumultuous 76th edition with Tuttle, jury president Wim Wenders and the wider festival staff weathering criticism of the event’s perceived lack of public solidarity for Palestinians, which included a high-profile petition condemning its silence.

European Film Promotion (EFP), the European Film Academy and distributor body Europa International countered the pushback against they festival.

“We look back on a strong and inspiring Berlinale and would like to express our sincere appreciation for the work of Tricia Tuttle as Director of the Festival,” they wrote.

“This year’s Berlinale lineup showcased a remarkable breadth of European cinema and brought together audiences and industry professionals from around the world.”

The statement is the first show of public support for Tuttle as rumors swirl around her future although Deadline hears there is widespread support for the Berlinale director and consensus that her axing would be a blow for the festival.
