Phillies acquire 7-year Mariners, Rangers veteran: Report

As the Philadelphia Phillies look to break a four-year streak of crushing postseason losses, it will be interesting to see which position players win the final few spots on the roster.

Philadelphia’s infield appears set barring injury, and the outfield received reinforcements in the form of two-time All-Star right fielder Adolis García. But there’s room on every roster for an everyday utility man, and the Phillies may have found themselves one on Friday night.

According to a report from The Athletic’s Will Sammon, the Phillies and seven-year veteran utility player Dylan Moore agreed to a minor-league contract with a non-roster invite to spring training. Per Sammon, if Moore makes the major league roster, he can earn up to $3.25 million between base salary and performance incentives.

Moore debuted in the majors with the Seattle Mariners in 2019, and gradually established himself as a key contributor. His best season came in 2024, when he accrued 2.2 bWAR in a career-high 135 games. He even won the utility Gold Glove Award for the American League.

But after a brutally slow start last year, the Mariners released Moore at the end of August. Though he caught on with the Texas Rangers to finish the season and performed well for 18 games, it was never going to be easy to find a major league contract.

Still, after reported interest from the Boston Red Sox, Moore found a deal to his liking with the Phillies, and still has a couple of weeks to prepare before position players are scheduled to report to spring training.

Philadelphia’s projected bench includes infielder Edmundo Sosa and fellow utility man Otto Kemp, but Moore shouldn’t have to compete with long-time right fielder Nick Castellanos, who is expected to be traded or released before the start of the season.
