Rumored Chiefs reunion is great news for Patrick Mahomes

The 2025 season is one the Kansas City Chiefs would like to forget.

A 6-10 record heading into Sunday’s Week 18 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes shelved with an ACL injury and tight end Travis Kelce likely heading toward retirement is presumably not the way the team envisioned its year going down.

The Chiefs have their challenges in front of them in fixing the issues that plagued them this season, and they may have a big hole to fill in their coaching staff if offensive coordinator Matt Nagy ends up leaving for a head coaching job elsewhere.

In fact, Nagy may not even need to land a head coaching gig to part ways with Kansas City, according to NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

If the Chiefs don’t bring Nagy back next year, they could possibly look to bring back a familiar face, which may be just what Mahomes needs potentially heading into his first season without his safety net (Kelce).

“With offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s contract up, several scenarios are in play — including Nagy getting a head coaching job,” Rapoport and Pelissero stated. “He’ll be among the top candidates, a rare one this cycle with experience and a background on offense. If he doesn’t get a head job, leaving to take over as a primary play-caller elsewhere is also possible.

“In either case, the Chiefs could welcome back former Reid assistants such as Mike Kafka or Eric Bieniemy, both of whom could inject some new ideas from their previous places of employment while retaining some familiarity. In addition, a substantial roster reboot is also afoot, with the team significantly over the cap and coming off a rare disappointing season.”

Head coach Andy Reid calls the Chiefs’ offensive plays, but few would argue the offense performed much better when Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator than Nagy.

Though Bieniemy didn’t call plays, he was a key cog in Kansas City’s offensive operation. He was responsible for scripting the first few plays of each drive, he was heavily involved in the play design and offensive strategy, and he relayed all of the plays to Mahomes.

In Nagy’s three seasons, Mahomes has averaged just 254.3 yards passing, 1.6 touchdowns, and 0.78 interceptions per game with a passer rating of 91.9.

In Bieniemy’s five seasons, Mahomes averaged 303.3 yards passing, 2.4 touchdowns, and 0.60 interceptions per game with a passer rating of 106.2.
