Man’s dishwasher discovery prompts thousands to check their own appliances

After living with a dull-looking dishwasher for more than three years, one man made a discovery that surprised him—and sent thousands online rushing to their kitchens to check their own appliances.

Jeff Hixson, who posts on Threads under the username @jeffhixson, shared a photo of his stainless steel dishwasher earlier this month alongside a confession.

“I’ve had this dishwasher for over 3 years and always wondered why it had such a dull finish,” he wrote. “Now I know lol.”

The reason, as it turned out, was simple but easy to miss—the dishwasher was still covered in its original protective plastic film.

In the photo, a partially peeled sheet of cloudy plastic reveals a noticeably shinier surface beneath. While the oversight might seem obvious in hindsight, the post struck a chord online, quickly racking up tens of thousands of likes and comments—and triggering a wave of similar discoveries.

People Make Appliance Discoveries

“OMG WHAT. I HAD THIS INSTALLED IN 2019,” one Threads user wrote, sharing a photo of their own Bosch dishwasher with plastic still clinging to the front. 

Another commenter said Hixson’s post prompted them to inspect their nearly five-year-old appliance, adding rows of laughing emojis alongside photographic proof of them pulling the plastic back.

“Ours is 3 years old and I always hated how dull it was,” another dishwasher owner wrote. “It’s a Christmas miracle!”

The phenomenon was not just limited to dishwashers, either. One user said they finally understood why their microwave buttons hadn’t been working properly after realizing the control panel was still wrapped. Another admitted they now knew why a TV bought during Black Friday had “air bubbles” on the screen—it, too, had never been fully unwrapped.

As the post gained traction, the comments section became a mix of disbelief, gratitude and humor. “Jeff, you posting this and helping countless others finding out, you deserve green light for every traffic light you go through,” one commenter wrote.

Hixson replied simply: “lol Thank you!”

A Viral Moment From Ordinary Packaging

While the viral moment may feel uniquely internet-driven, the underlying issue is more common than many consumers realize.

According to appliance manufacturers and consumer guides, stainless steel appliances are often shipped with a thin plastic film designed to protect surfaces from scratches during transport and installation. 

This film is meant to be removed immediately after installation, but it can be difficult to see—especially once appliances are fitted.

As Hixson’s post demonstrated, many homeowners either forget, do not notice or assume the dull finish is intentional—until someone else’s viral mistake mirrors their own.

Now, in kitchens across the world, people are busy peeling away years-old plastic coverings, revealing shiny stainless steel.
