Ricky Gervais: Mortality will release globally on Netflix on December 30.
The stand-up special was filmed at the London Palladium this year, focusing on the comedian, writer and actor’s own mortality through a “darkly funny” filter that looks into his life, death and the state of the world. The topic is a common one for Gervais, who focused on it in Netflix comedy series After Life.
Netflix has promising “no topic is off limits” in the special.
Gervais’ Mortality show will complete its international 80-arena tour this December, having played at L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl, New York’s Radio City Music Hall and a 14-night run at the Palladium. It has broken box office records in numerous European territories
“I think Mortality is my most honest and confessional show so far and also my favourite tour,” said the five-time Golden Globe host. “I still can’t believe what a privilege it is to fly around the world making people laugh.”
Gervais, best known for BBC series The Office, has established himself as one of the world’s top big-arena stand-ups through Mortality and previous shows Humanity, Supernature and Armageddon, which won a Golden Globe. His 2022 show Supernature came under fire for transphobic jokes, which he later said didn’t target “trans folk, but trans activist ideology.”
He has partnered with Netflix for most of his creative endeavors in recent years, while at the same time building a reputation for roasting Hollywood’s biggest stars in his Golden Globe hosting role.
In September, Netflix announced Alley Cats, an adult animation starring Gervais and other British comedy talents such as Diane Morgan, Tom Basden and Kerry Godliman.
