Hopes for a swift end to the government shutdown dimmed Friday as Democrats held firm in the Senate and President Donald Trump prepared for layoffs and spending cuts across federal agencies.
On the third day of the shutdown and on the fourth vote, a Republican bill to reopen the government fell short in a 54-44 Senate vote, well below the 60 needed to advance. Lawmakers then left the Capitol for the weekend, with no further votes scheduled and little sign of progress in breaking the stalemate.
Senate Democrats John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada continued to break ranks and voted with Republicans on their “clean” continuing resolution that would have prevented a shutdown of the U.S. government. In addition, Angus King, a Maine independent who caucuses with Democrats, again voted with Republicans on the measure,
