Craig Counsell Makes Bold Statement Amid Cubs Decline

The Chicago Cubs are going to the postseason, but it would be wrong to say they are peaking on their way to October. The team is 32-30 in the second half.

The Cubs entered Thursday having lost five of their last six games. The team is also playing without Kyle Tucker. The recent five-game losing streak has many fans concerned about the team’s outlook in October.

However, Craig Counsell is not too worried. He spoke about the losing streak before Wednesday night’s win, and pointed to how other contenders around the league have been playing.

“Sometimes, just provide some perspective around the league,” Counsell said, per The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma. “We’re in a good spot.”

The Detroit Tigers have blown a 14-game division lead, entered Thursday losing 11 of their last 12, and on an eight-game losing streak. The Toronto Blue Jays have also stumbled as of late, allowing the New York Yankees a chance to win the division. The New York Mets are fighting to even stay in the postseason race.

Counsell is not wrong in saying that the Cubs are not alone in their struggles. However, the concern with the Cubs is that they have not looked like a dominant side in months.

The team was at one point in a position to run away with the National League Central. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker have not played like superstars in quite some time and the team has not gone on many strong stretches.

Despite all of the woes, Counsell thinks his team is doing fine. However, they could face the San Diego Padres to open the postseason, and with how the Cubs have played lately, they could be outmatched.
