Mets Predicted to Fire Carlos Mendoza If Team Collapses: ‘As Good As Gone’

The New York Mets are fighting to stay in the postseason picture. However, they entered Friday with just a two-game lead on the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds for the final National League Wild Card spot.

The Mets were very aggressive in the offseason. They signed Juan Soto and even found a way to reach a short-term agreement with Pete Alonso. The team doubled down by being aggressive at the trade deadline.

Despite their moves, they are not locked to be playing baseball next month. If they fail after all of these moves, FanSided’s Eric Cole predicts Mendoza will be fired if the Mets are eliminated from postseason contention.

“I have to go Mendoza here, and if the Mets don’t make the playoffs, I think he is as good as gone,” wrote Cole when discussing which manager’s face the most pressure right now. “New York had massive expectations coming into this season and now the Mets are hanging on for dear life to even get into the postseason. Even if the Mets get in, they are going to have to look good in the playoffs for Mendoza’s job to be safe for next season — and even that is debatable.”

Mendoza helped lead the Mets all the way to the National League Championship Series last season. However, if he fails to follow up last year’s improbable run with another deep run that features Soto, the Mets may look for a manager who can maximize their talent. The Mets made a major move when they signed Soto. If they miss the postseason, someone will have to take the blame.
