AUSTIN (KXAN) — For 45 years, Juan Meza has been serving up big smiles and good food at his family restaurant, Juan in a Million.
The restaurant has become an Austin staple, welcoming both new and longtime customers.
Meza didn’t start out in the restaurant business though, he was a teacher in Austin with his wife.
“I would teach all day and then I would go wash dishes at a Mexican restaurant in the evenings,” said Meza. “I enjoyed the hustle and the bustle of the place and people coming in and all the noise.”
So, when a building on East Cesar Chavez went up for sale, Meza jumped on the opportunity to start his business and the rest is history.
Meza said he takes pride in his family owned and operated business.
“It has become a family affair and it has made my job a lot easier,” Meza said.
He said it’s his customers that have kept him in business, and he’s grateful for all the familiar faces, as well as the new ones.
“Austin has been good to us, our customers have been good to us, so it is a blessing,” Meza said.
The Don Juan Taco Challenge
Juan in a Million has become a popular spot for competitive eaters as well, with it’s well known “The Don Juan Taco Challenge.”
Think multiple pounds of potatoes, eggs and cheese, as well as multiple tortillas.
“So it started getting competitive — two, three, there is a lady that walked in that ate 13 of those and the most amazing thing is she walked out of here,” Meza said.
If you think you can take down the challenge head over to Juan in a Million!
