AUSTIN (KXAN) — In the latest episode of the Horns Report, KXAN sports director Roger Wallace, KXAN sports digital editor Billy Gates and 3rd and Longhorn podcast producer Nick Shuley chat about what both went wrong and right for the Texas football team in a 14-7 loss to Ohio State on Saturday.
Undoubtedly, the most talked-about and, as a result, scrutinized player this season is Texas quarterback Arch Manning. He made his third career start against the Buckeyes, and didn’t exactly fill up the stat sheet like a lot of people, perhaps unfairly, expected him to. The guys talk about what they saw during the game and react to comments made by Steve Sarkisian in his weekly press conference Monday.

Texas played the type of game that typically results in wins on the road. They played great defense, allowing the Buckeyes to gain barely more than 200 yards of offense, and Texas ran the ball effectively, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Shuley points out how well CJ Baxter played in his return to the field after missing all of last season with a knee injury, and Wallace said this was the kind of defensive performance to expect from the Longhorns this season.
For the first time in 24 games, however, the Longhorns failed to create a turnover, and that was something Wallace pointed toward as a difference maker.
The guys also looked ahead to this coming Saturday’s home opener against the San Jose State Spartans, and how Texas can regroup and get back on the right path. The Spartans lost to Central Michigan 16-14 in their season opener, but with a “Spread and Shred” offense that includes all kinds of passing, it’ll be a much different look than the Longhorns’ defense is used to.
