Mets could trade away $162M veteran this offseason: Report

The New York Mets missed the postseason this year, and with many holes on the roster, will have to make major changes to become contenders again.

The Mets’ starting rotation lacks a real ace, and Pete Alonso is a free agent. Potentially replacing Alonso and adding starting pitchers are two of the Mets’ biggest concerns this offseason. The Mets have many avenues to improve their roster, but the trade market is an interesting one. The Mets have plenty of young players and veterans who could be valuable to other teams.

While the Mets are not likely to make Francisco Lindor available, they are open to trading some other stars. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Brandon Nimmo is among the players available in trade this winter.

Nimmo has a full no-trade clause, so he would have to approve any move. However, trading him could yield the Mets either the player they need or simply financial flexibility to make a signing. Nimmo signed an eight-year, $162 million deal with the Mets in 2023.

Last season, Nimmo slashed .262/.324/.436 and hit 25 home runs. He has spent his entire career with the Mets and has a .802 career OPS in 10 seasons. He has hit at least 20 home runs in each of the last three seasons and could be sent to an outfielder-needy team in exchange for starting pitching. After over 1,000 games for the Mets, Nimmo’s time could be coming to an end in Queens.
